...Moholy-Nagy's fellow Hungarian Alexander Korda commissioned him to design special effects for the science fiction film Things to Come. He was asked to make a film about the sex life of the lobster, at a time when David Attenborough was still a boy. A quizzical Moholy-Nagy spent several weeks on the Sussex coast getting to know the fishermen, grappling with their dialect, recording their families and close community. At the other end of the social spectrum, he took photographs for Bernard Fergusson's book Portrait of Eton and John Betjeman's Oxford University Chest. Where Sybil responded to 1930s England with an often explosive impatience at its snobbery, Moholy-Nagy remained unemotional, professional. The English class structure was the object of his fascinated observation.

But Moholy-Nagy was not totally cold-shouldered. He designed the publicity for Jack Pritchard's English modernist Isokon Furniture Company. One leaflet included a typically dreamlike small drawing of a figure floating in a bath, suggesting that a Breuer Long Chair gave a similar sensation. Imperial Airways commissioned him to design a mobile exhibition to tour the British empire in a railroad car, promoting the still-novel idea of air travel. He became display consultant for the menswear store Simpsons of Piccadilly, bemusing passersby with his abstract compositions of striped shirts and bowler hats. But these activities were desultory in relation to Moholy-Nagy's far-reaching design philosophy.

Is there anything this man didn't do? I really wonder how a conversation between hedi slimane and moholy nagy would play out.

this issue of the lovely Lula magazine has an irresistible strawberry shortcake theme.

Lula is such a welcomed move away from the wasted doe-eyed teen aesthetic that seems to be a default for so many fashion magazines. Lula reminds me of when clueless somehow emerged like sunshine out of early 90's grunge.

the cutest part of the trip through lula land for me this issue was the interview with muriel fahrion, the creator of the shortcake gang as she explains how the agency she was working for at the time own all the rights to the strawberry shortcake brand and that with every request she gets for a special strawberry shortcake illustration she explains that she can't accept money for such things, but if they could instead make a donation to the madison fire department in the name of strawberry shortcake.

Staying creative is hard work. Honestly, I don’t think when I got into art school I was very talented at all. I struggled to stand out. I struggled to stay in school. Staying creative was hard work. BUT, the one thing that kept me focused was my desire to be good. I wanted to be really good. I wanted to be as good as those people that WERE talented. I used to think I would eventually, if I worked hard enough, master art like a math equation and then I could relax and just make great stuff and let everything else follow. That time definitely never came, and I know now I never want it to, because the most important thing that keeps me creative is my wanting to be good. So if I’m ever in a rut, the best things to get me out of them is to put myself in places that engage that desire to be good. In a general sense this means to get out and be expose to others creating. In my opinion, there is no better way to trigger your own creativity, than to see what great things others have made or are making. Going to museums, galleries, shows, etc. always inspires my mind in a way that make me want to get back into my own work and make good things. Be good.

this is a first...a recipe post.

for vodka lovers.

put 1/2 cup of sugar with 3 tbspoons of water in a pan and stir over a low heat till melted...

mix 80mls of grey goose (or your favourite vodka) with 1/4 cup of mint leaves and about 2 tbspoons of lime juice

add the cooled sugar syrup to taste

strain the mint leaves if you want to, then pour into glasses filled with ice.
